Being asked to solve word problems was the absolute bane of my existence when I was in school. I mean, what place do letters and words have in math anyway. {Can I get a witness?}

And word problems are even more frustrating for kids who struggle with executive function skills or reading/reading comprehension.

Word problems can be tricky for several reasons.

1. Learners may not understand the math concept well enough to apply it.
2. Learners might struggle with reading and/or reading comprehension.
3. Learners can get lost in all the steps involved with solving a word problem.

But I have GOOD NEWS! You can do something about it!! While there are several things you can do to help learners with word problems, I have a freebie to help…

Introducing STEPS!

Solve Word Problems with STEPS

What does STEPS stand for? I’m so glad you asked!

S – STUDY the question. What are you being asked to do?

T – TAKE TIME to carefully read the problem. Look for key words and key concepts.

E – EVALUATE the strategies and steps needed to solve the problem. ELIMINATE any extra information.

P – PICK and try a strategy to solve the problem. {Sometimes learners must use more than one strategy to solve a problem, too!}

S – Does your answer make SENSE? Check your answer!
