Welcome to the first post of my So, You Want to Homeschool Series! Today we’re going to explore the topic of Homeschool Flexibility!
One of the beauties of homeschooling is flexibility! As a matter of fact, when it comes to homeschooling, flexibility is the name of the game.
Homeschool Flexibility
This means that you have great freedom with homeschooling! You don’t have to homeschool your learners the same way Suzy does. You don’t even have to follow my suggestions. God gave your kids to you. You know them better than anyone else. Use that to your advantage!
You have great flexibility and options to meet the needs of the kids you know best. And maybe that’s what scares some of you…the endless options! Does walking into a vendor hall of curricula make you want to hyperventilate? If so, don’t worry! We’ll get to that later in this series.
One of the ways you can reign in the options is keeping your freedom and flexibility within the boundaries of your state’s laws concerning homeschooling. This is key!
You want to make sure you know what your state expects of you. Some questions you need to know are:
- Do you have to keep attendance?
- Do you need to keep a lesson planner? {We have one, if you do!}
- Do you have to homeschool for a certain number of hours every day?
- What choices for testing do you have in your state?
If you don’t know your state’s laws, the Homeschool Legal Defense Association is a website that can help!
5 Ways to Explore Homeschool Flexibility
{I’m sure there are WAY MORE than five!!}
1. You can homeschool without a dedicated “homeschool room.” You can even homeschool without a desk. Yes, you can.
2. You can choose the curriculum that works best for your child. I know this is one of the scariest freedoms in homeschooling, and we’ll get to this one later in the series!
3. You can set your own schedule. Homeschooling doesn’t have to happen only during traditional school hours. I can even happen on the weekends {insert gasp}.
4. You can take field trips and travel without having to go during the peak times or the peak season. Yippee! I can’t tell you how many times we’ve visited our science museum with hardly anyone there. Talk about freedom to explore!
5. You can choose activities that interest your kids in more flexible ways. Your child can complete his/her schoolwork standing up. They can listen to music or go outside. We’ll explore more about this in this series.
