We recently moved into a new home that we were able to build. I’d love to give you a homeschool room tour of our new space!

We finally settled on putting the homeschool room in our basement. At first, we were going to put it on our main floor like it was in our last house, but we quickly realized it had to go in the basement if we wanted to keep our square footage down. {Oh, the joys of building a house!}

I wanted a space that was off the main room so that it could be closed off. We decided to add french doors {open/not seen in this photo} that could close off the room when needed.

mom's desk - homeschool room

One of my favorite additions is the farmhouse-style table I was able to put in the schoolroom for my “desk” and work space with the kids. This is a table my husband’s grandfather made. We’ve had for 20 years and has just been stored in the attic. I’m so glad to finally put it to good use!

Where I bought my stuff {you might begin to see a pattern}

  • blue rolling chair – Amazon
  • rug under my desk – Amazon {We have two rugs in our house by this company, and I love them both!}
  • map above fire place {not seen in the photo above} – Amazon
  • colorful organizer on my desk – Learning Resources
  • Homeschool Lesson Plan Book {on my desk} is my creation and will be updated soon for next school year
  • colorful drawer organizer for paper and other supplies {to the left of the fireplace} – Amazon
  • 4-tiered rolling cart {to the right of the fireplace} – Amazon
  • green-ish bin on the floor is a file bin – Amazon

two independent work desk areas

In the corners of the room, I have two independent work desk areas. I didn’t assign each child a desk like I did in our last schoolroom. I wanted our seating to be more flexible than that. At each desk is an IKEA shelf with cups plus a desk lamp. I have purposely kept this area pretty free of wall clutter so as not to distract my already-distractible kids.

dry erase boards behind independent work desks

I hung dry erase boards behind each independent work desk so that they could use them for spelling words, magnetic letters, their independent work pages, etc.

organizer in homeschool room

On one of the walls, I put an organizer. It’s really just several of the cube organizers put together and then one part of our IKEA TroFast system. We had the entire TroFast system in our last schoolroom, but I put three parts of it upstairs in the hallway for the kids’ toys. Most of the colorful plastic organizers on the shelves come from the dollar store, believe it or not.

I first had the organizer filled with lots of books, but it felt too cluttered to me, especially since it’s the first thing you see when you come down the stairs.

I decided to use the closet in the room as more of a “book closet” instead of supply closet. I tried to keep all their books on the lower two levels so that they are easy to access. Again, most of these containers came from the dollar store.

  • seasonal picture books {in the crates on the floor}
  • fiction books that are on my kids’ reading levels now {1st shelf}
  • nonfiction books {on the shelf with red math books bin}
  • science books are in the yellow bin {although I may figure out a way to bring those down}
  • 2nd – 5th grade chapter books {in the blue bins on the right shelf}

Bible verse for homeschool room

I thought a framed chalkboard would fit just right outside the closet. I love this Bible verse and felt it very appropriate for us!

reading corner in homeschool room

I wanted a cozy spot for my kids to read in one corner. So I splurged on a big bean bag and got a circle rug. There’s also a bench they can sit on to work or read. You can barely see them in the picture, but they often use their lap desks {to the left of the bench} and work on the floor, too.

phonics cards and number line around homeschool room

I placed a number line and our vowel phonics cards at the top of our schoolroom wall. We use them all the time during phonics, spelling, or writing.

Someone asked why I posted them so high. There are several reasons.

1- Since they’re older now, I felt it more developmentally appropriate.

2- I didn’t want my walls to be too cluttered.

3- They have portable spelling folders they can refer to that have the same information in them. {See my Kindergarten Folder, 1st/2nd Grade Spelling Folder, and Elementary Spelling Folder for 3rd-5th grades.}

computer desk outside of the homeschool room

Right outside of the schoolroom, we put a desk for the laptop. My kids each have a technology time each day, but I knew that putting the computer IN the schoolroom would be distracting. So, it’s just outside where I can monitor it when needed. We bought the desk and the chair on Amazon. {Can you tell I love online shopping?}

We’ve schooled in the schoolroom for nearly two months now, so things might get changed up if I see things aren’t working. That’s the beauty and flexibility of homeschooling!

That was a tour of our homeschool room in our new house. I hope that maybe you were inspired and got some new ideas for your space.
